Why People Work after They Retire

No one can live without money. We need a steady source of income and this is especially true when we retire.

Most people retire after having worked for 30 or 40 years. They are usually in their 60s when they retire. If they planned for their retirement, they may have a steady income. The question is "Do they have enough to meet their financial obligations and to pursue activities such as travel?"

Many people save all their lives for retirement by participating in their company's retirement plan and investing money on the side. With the constant changes in the economy, sometimes this nest egg is not enough. This is why some retirees look for part-time jobs.

Others like to work. Some retirees make plans to do various things with their free time but find that it is not as satisfying as when they worked. They miss the companionship of their co-workers and the daily tasks they performed. Some occupations can be used to supplement part-time income such as Artprofessionals who provide financial advice or work with computers. They enjoy the freedom of not having a full-time job while still being paid.

Sometimes retirees are apprehensive about what they are going to after they retire. While working, they daydream about the traveling they will do or the mornings and afternoons on the golf course. As their retirement day gets closer, they start to worry about whether they will have enough money to meet their expenses. They do not want to sit home all day watching television. Many people give up after they retire.

Think about what you want to do and plan for it. You may want a change of scenery and decide to move to another state. If you live in a state where it is cold most of the fall and winter and humid all summer, you may consider moving to states like Florida, New Mexico, or Arizona.

You may also consider moving to another country. Costa Rica is one country where many Americans have retired. The cost of living makes it attractive.

Do not forget about the activities and hobbies you have enjoyed during your working years. Now is the time when you work on them full-time. You can spend half the day doing volunteer work and the other half pursuing the activities you enjoy. An occasional trip will work wonders.

Do not be afraid of retirement. Plan for it. Enjoy it!
